What’s better than yogurt? Fresh, delicious homemade yogurt, of course! And, if you do a quick Google search, you’ll find there’s no shortage of advice and suggestions when it comes to making your own.
It’s simple, right?
Well, that all depends on the recipe you follow, the equipment you have, the time available to you, and your own ability in the kitchen.
One of the most important decisions you’ll face when making your own yogurt is what type of incubator to use. You could choose to employ a yogurt maker, an immersion circulator, a covered container, a conventional oven, a microwave, a thermos, a cooler or even a slow cooker – all of which require slightly different approaches.
Then there’s the temperature, which is critical. Too low and growth will be prohibited. Too high and the bacteria will be inactivated. Getting this right can be a case of trial and error over the course of several attempts.
On top of that, you’ll also need to gather up or invest in a range of other equipment, including jars to store the finished product, a thermometer, a strainer and a muslin cloth.
